Organize Your Life for Success
As the saying goes, nature abhors a vacuum. If there is a space, nature attempts to fill it with ideas, people, or things. People are like that, too; if we see a space, we put stuff in it. That can be a good thing, but it can also be bad for organizing your space. For instance, did you know that we never get around to using about 80 percent of the things we have? Eventually, the things we never use become clutter.
Clutter doesn’t sound like a threat to your livelihood, but it is.
The average American spends approximately 2 and a half days per year looking for their things they need in the clutter they created. Time is money — sounds cliché, but that is an absolute.
You have better things to do with your temporal currency than to spend it sifting through clutter. That’s why you need to organize your space.
Unfortunately, life gets in the way after you finally organize your things; 55 percent of Americans in a 2016 survey said that they felt disorganized 2 weeks after cleaning and organizing their space, while almost 40 percent of Americans felt that way only a week later! It’s easy to fall off, as far as keeping your space organized goes, but here are some tips to get you back on track.
You should always have an organization plan. Organization takes thinking and plotting, and you won’t get the results you desire from aimlessly throwing out stuff. Assess what you have and ask yourself if you need it (or maybe even want it) or not. You may need labels for your things, but they don’t have to be anything fancy. After the labeling, then you can throw away the unnecessary stuff.
But what about the stuff we actually need? That can become a disorganized mess too, and we can pay the price for it: 60 percent of people in a survey by Pixie said that they’ve been late to work or school because they were looking for misplaced items. You can prevent that for yourself by having dedicated storage boxes for your things. If you know which container the item you’re looking for is in, you won’t have to scramble for your things before work.
Another survey by IKEA found that women with shoe racks were 7 times more likely to be on time for work than women without shoe racks. Consistent lateness is a fireable offense, and no one wants that! Something as simple as getting a shoe rack (or other shoe storage) can make a noticeable difference in your success!
Decluttering and organizing your things puts you in a better mood. People have said that they feel less stressed out and more productive after organizing their things, which frees them up to pursue their goals. However, a national poll reported that nearly 33 percent of people couldn’t keep their space organized because of a lack of space, which means they are overwhelmed and blocked from success (in that way).
If you never know where to keep your storage containers, let me remind you that you have more storage space than you realize. You can use shelving systems on the walls, or hanging racks on doors. You’re not limited to storing stuff on the ground.
Keeping your space organized is important to your success, but unfortunately, it also consumes your time. It’s not a waste, that’s for sure, but you only have 24 hours in your day to do what you need. 27.3 of people in a national poll found themselves unable to keep up with organizing their space because they didn’t have enough time.
