How to Do Vacation

Preparing for vacation is a lot of work. Whether you’re heading on a road trip or you’re heading out of the country and need to dust off your passport, taking a vacation requires careful planning and preparation. That’s why we’ve compiled this list of tips for preparing your home for vacation.

  • Arrange someone to check in. Have them take out your trash on Trash Day and pick up your mail for you.
  • Turn out all the lights and close the blinds.
  • Scatter your valuables at home and write down where you are putting them all. This is so you don’t forget where they are. This includes passports, certificates, jewelry, etc.
  • Unplug all appliances and electronics. This includes toasters, TVs, bathroom gadgets, chargers, computers. This prevents sucking up the electricity and raising your bill sky high.
  • Purge all perishables from the refrigerator. Eat them, or take them with you or toss them out. The last thing you want to do is come home to sour milk and having to throw it out.
  • Lock up all the windows and doors. You don’t want to have water damage in your house in case it rains and this ensures maximum safety.
  • Amp up your security. If you can get a camera system, that would be fine. But if you can’t, a sign or two on the exterior of your home won’t hurt you.

When you’re busy getting ready for vacation, it can be easy to overlook basic steps that will keep your home safe and sound (and, in many cases, save you money) while you’re away. Use this small guideline as a base to your actions in prepping your home. Use logic and common sense and everything will be fine. Enjoy your vacation!
