Cleaning Your Floors After the Winter

Hey, everyone! I hope you’re all doing well. Listen, I have some exciting news: I recently ordered a steam cleaner for Andy’s Quality Cleaning!

You’re probably wondering why I’m eager to get something as basic as a floor steamer. After all, having one in your household isn’t a must. Well, a steamer being so basic is why the thought of owning one excites me. Let me explain further.

Why Is This Good For Me Right Now?

It’s important to clean your floors in the late winter/early spring. You’ll always have to worry about tracking contaminants from the outside into your home, but because people and animals will track snow (which can carry outside contaminants) into it, the amount of contaminants on your floor increases during the wintertime. That’s not something you want!

Stains from snow and rock salt are unsightly, but did you know snow and rock salt will damage your floor? That’s right, the rock salt that stops people from slipping on ice and getting into winter accidents has granules that are big enough to scratch up your non-carpeted floors (and get embedded in and change the color of carpeted floors). Even though melted snow seems harmless, it can eat away at your floor’s finish.

So How Would I Get My Floors Clean After The Winter?

You can technically clean your floors by yourself, especially if you don’t have many to clean or the winter weather didn’t leave a lot of heavy stains on them. You can just mop tile or hardwood floors and vacuum your carpeted floors to get up stains and debris from melted snow. Rock salt is tougher to remove from your floors, but it’s still simple.

On hardwood and tile floors, put a water and white vinegar solution directly onto rock salt stains. Don’t douse the entire floor in your solution; too much vinegar can damage your floor. Let the solution sit on the stains for 5 minutes, then mop it up. Go back over the area with a damp microfiber cloth to remove excess salt, and then dry that area

To remove rock salt stains from carpeted floors, put a water and white vinegar solution onto the stained areas (after vacuuming to remove excess rock salt). Dab your solution onto the area and let it sit for 10-15 minutes. Blot the area dry with a dry sponge. Put water without vinegar on the area to get rid of any residue in the carpet, and blot that dry.

Okay, Where Does The Steam Cleaner Come Into Play?

You can get rid of some stains with a mop/vacuum, cloth, sponge, and a water & vinegar solution. But you won’t be able to get rid of them all that way. For more stubborn stains, you’ll need much more time and effort to work with your solution, abrasive chemicals — that can damage your floors or health — or a floor steamer.

A steam cleaner can remove difficult stains from carpeted and non-carpeted floors — without chemicals — simply and quickly! The high heat from the steamer kills germs (like COVID-19 and the flu), so you’ll be able to disinfect your floors while you clean them.

I called a steam cleaner “basic” earlier because it’s such an essential tool for deep cleaning. But because deep cleaning your floors doesn’t need to happen often, it may not figure into your household’s budget. That's fine; you still have options.

You can rent a floor steamer, but if you’re unsure of how to use it, you could end up damaging it or your floors. But…there’s always Andy’s Quality Cleaning! We’d be happy to lend our services to you. Our steam cleaner will help us keep your household happy and safe, like you deserve to be. Contact us today!
